Week 1 internship blog
Hello, my name is Patrick Callaghan. I am a Junior working towards
my bachelor’s degree in history planning on graduating next year. My interests
in history range in a variety of locations and time periods. My favorites are
World War 1 and World War 2, Feudalism in Europe and Japan focusing on the
elite warrior class of both, the Mongolian Empire during Genghis Khan's rule,
American history like the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and I also love
learning more and more about modern military and I enjoy seeing how it has changed
from the past to today. I find war very interesting especially looking at the
effects it has on society and vice versa. I have had great opportunities
to further my learning of one of these topics through travel. Visiting family
in France allowed my Mom and I to visit the American beach landings of World
War 2. We were able to see the monuments for the fallen and museums containing actual
tanks and other equipment used during the war. However the most interesting
aspect of this trip to me were the beaches themselves. On the beaches the
bunkers and artillery in some areas still remain along with the craters from
the fighting, as well as many Czech Hedgehog’s on the beach's.
I think the most important aspect of internships is providing a
great opportunity to work with others in the same or similar fields and to
discover future jobs or topics that I may want to adventure into. Another
aspect of internships that is useful is providing a way to gain work experience
in a group to achieve goals in a timely manner. This will be my first look
into what future jobs under the umbrella of history could provide and ask for. I
am not going to lie and say I know exactly what I want to do or in what time
period for my future career, but I hope that this will help point me in the
right direction and possibly narrow the field of opportunities that lie ahead. The
reason I chose this internship to be apart of is because it allows me to not
only do something I enjoy and look to do in the future but also to help further
the progress in representing the forgotten or underrepresented Americans that
have fought for this country and its ideas of the United States of America.
Perhaps what we do will only be a baby step in the right direction, but it is progress,
nonetheless. I hope to also improve my skills both as a student and a
researcher from this internship.
As a group we have not met in zoom to discuss the project itself
yet, so I still am not sure what my role will be or who I will be working with
the closest. I am nervous and excited at the same time to begin and learn new
and interesting history I have not delved deep into yet and bring it to others
that have not learned or heard of before.
